01 / THE KYIV BEGINNING

1878

Joseph Marchak.
An enterprise takes shape.

In 1878, Joseph Marchak established his jewelry workshop in Kyiv, marking the beginning of the Marchak jewelry history.

His path began with an apprenticeship and developed into a business in jewelry and precious materials. Craftsmanship, attention to quality and the ability to build trusted commercial relationships shaped its growth.

By 1899, the Kyiv enterprise had grown to employ 150 workers, reflecting the development of a workshop into a substantial jewelry business.

In 1913, Joseph Marchak supplied jewelry and precious-metal works associated with Tsar Nicholas II. Recognized as one of the Russian Empire’s leading jewelers, he became known as the “Cartier of Kyiv.”

02 / MATERIALS, MAKING & COMMERCE

The record of
an operating enterprise.

An early catalogue connects the history to the practical world of a jewelry business.

The Kyiv catalogue cover records the Marchak name, its products and its commercial presence. It offers a tangible view of the relationship between creative work, production and enterprise.

That relationship provides a useful perspective on ownership: value depends not only on a material or finished object, but also on the knowledge, work and commitments behind it.
